GEOGRAPHY OF PORT BLAIR DIOCESE..( ISLANDS )
THE ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS ARE TWO GROUPS OF ISLANDS OF IMPENETRABLE FORESTS, LIKE A CHAIN BIG AND SMALL SPREAD IN THE WATERS OF THE BAY OF BENGAL. THEY ARE AT THE LONGITUDE OF 29 DEGREE TO 94 DEGREE EAST AND THE LATITUDE OF 6 DEGREE AND 14 DEGREE NORTH RESPECTIVELY. THE TOTAL LENGTH AND BREATH OF THE ANDAMAN GROUP OF ISLANDS IS 467 KMS AND 52KMS ONLY, AND THE NICOBAR GROUP 259 KMS AND 58KMS RESPECTIVELY. THE4 ANDAMAN GROUP OF ISLANDS COVERS AN AREA OF 6300 SQ. KMS, WHILE THE NICOBAR GROUPS MEASURES ABOUT 1953 SQ. KMS. THE TOTAL GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF THE ISLANDS IS ABOUT 8300 SQ. KMS OF WHICH MORE THAN 92% IS UNDER FOREST COVER.
PORT BLAIR IS THE CAPITAL OF THE ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS. THE DISTANCE FROM PORT BLAIR TO KOLKATA IS ABOUT 1255 KMS , TO VISHAKHAPATNAM IS ABOUT 1200 KMS AND TO CHENNAI IS ABOUT 1190 KMS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF ISLANDS INHABITED IS ABOUT 38 ONLY AMONG 500 PLUS ISLANDS.
